I think I know what you're talking about Sara - the city of Chester Upland, PA for one (http://www.notinteacherschool.com/post/16176764851/a-tale-of-one-district), and Representative Hochberg was just tearing the TEA a new one about Premont ISD (http://www.texastribune.org/texas-education/public-education/texas-school-suspends-sports-keep-afloat/) shutting down its sports in a last ditch to keep the schools open. This is a fact of life in America: the majority of school funding comes from local property taxes. If you're poor, there's no money for your schools. If your property taxes go up, enabling more school spending, then you have to move. And of course, in this whole post-racism America, "poor" means "not white" or, if you are white, "country hick we don't care about...."

I keep hearing about all these schools in which the majority of the students are homeless or near to it. Those teachers (and Ellen) spend so much money and energy just trying to feed and clothe the kids. And another school actually went without paychecks because they were near closure and scared to let the kids go without that escape they get from their terrible home lives. What do you think? There is a point to be made here but im too tired to do it.

I'm glad you have the energy to care. I often have fallen into the hopelessness that you joke about at the start of the post, but we need folks like you who are willing to face the stark truth and try and make it better. : )
